If hill climb fans were asked to name the most iconic cars in the sport, without a moment's hesitation – with goosebumps on their arms and their ears still ringing – the vast majority would name Georg Plasa's BMW 320 E36 and BMW 134. The power from their Judd V8 engines easily exceeded 500bhp, and the 3.4l unit revved well beyond 10,000 rpm!
Plasa won the first of his four consecutive titles in the 2006 FIA European Hill Climb Cup at the wheel of the BMW 320 E36 he had designed himself.
After two years of development work ahead of the FIA European Hill Climb Championship, in 2011 he introduced an evolution of the 320: the 1 Series Coupé 134, still powered by the Judd V8 but optimised and even lighter (weighing less than 800 kilos).
His eighth appearance behind the wheel came to a tragic end during the Rieti hill climb in Italy. That was 15 years ago, but the legend of Georg Plasa will live on forever.
